Milestone: Purchased Hosting*

leave a comment »

I’m setting up a new site. What with the google sandbox and all, I’m going to launch it with the actual planned website’s look and feel but using a WordPress backend. It’ll be basically a teaser-cum-design prototype with only 10 items instead of thousands (hundreds?) that I have planned.

So hooray! I now have hosting and my domain name is pointing towards it. I also have some examples, from a well-established authority, of the sort of info I plan to provide. Not announcing the website or concept here until I have the WordPress prototype up and running. I shall start on that this weekend, assuming I find time between watching Prince at the O2 and going to Go Ape.

*I like to aim low and celebrate often :)

The cream is slightly sour

Hrm… in my previous post I was happy that I can now redirect the hotlinkers to an ad-filled wrapper while still showing them the hotlinked images. Previously, I was just redirecting the hotlinkers to a 404 page which politely informed them that they were attempting to access a hotlinked image.

In practice, my site now looks less shabby. It also means that I have far fewer pageloads (about 10,000 fewer). OTOH, unique visitors has only decreased by 1000 compared to May (5000 compared to June) so theoretically, I’m just weeding out those people who pop over to see the image and then leave. No bad thing.

I think I’ll stick some links to random posts just above the hotlinked image display. You never know… a small proportion of the image viewers may convert to readers.

Got the Cream

I’ve just written a combination of .htaccess and my 404 page to redirect hotlinkers. Instead of them either

  • sucking up my bandwidth
  • being confronted with a crappy 404 file not found page

…they get the image file wrapped in a page that says “this image has been hotlinked”

It’s probably very naughty to be redirecting .jpg links to php files but I don’t care. It means that bandwidth thiefs still have to put up with my ads and my site doesn’t look quite as shabby with the thousands of people who were previously getting “File not found. Or you’re here from google images.”

Company Registrations

leave a comment »

It’s very difficult to register a company in this country if you don’t own a house. Even if you do own a place, most apartment complexes have a specific clause in the leasehold that prohibits running a business from the address.

I presume that’s because certain company documents in the UK need to be available to the public for at least 2 hours a day. I’m not sure if that’s all limited companies or just public limited companies. Either way, it’s hassle.

It will cost me a minimum of £85 + VAT each year to get a registered company address in London. Poo.
